How a Janitor (Toilet Cleaner) helped to Send a Man on the Moon
What is the steroid that when injected to repetitive work, makes the most boring job inspiring
The Biggest Secret to Business Success
The Ingredient without which every business is bound to fail
To understand more about the above read on …..
1) Systems & Processes are the Backbone of any Successful Business / Brand
2) Without Systems it isn’t possible to scale up a business
3) Systems brings consistency Business Processes and Consistency is the bed rock upon which Businesses and Brands are built
4) Without Systems People will do their work in their own individual style
5) Doing work in their own way and a little differently is a natural human desire and a way to express one’s Creativity and fight back boredom
6) However, this does not help in building overall consistency which is a key requirement of Business & Brand Building. So one can argue that Systems & Processes kill Creativity
7) Then should we for the sake of consistency discourage Creativity?
8) Certainly Not. Because without inspiration it is nearly impossible to work consistently and produce great results
9) So although these two points appear counterintuitive ; creativity is needed and still not needed, one needs to understand how to deal with it
10) This is because if you are Creative you will steal away the consistency factor, a key requirement of Business and if you follow Systems Oriented Approach but feel Uninspired you will again fail the business
11) So what is the solution??
12) The Solution to lies in creating and selling a larger Business Vision or Purpose ; the starting point of any Buisness. Without a Vision it is better to not even start the business
13) For an Organisation to Succeed & For Employees to also feel inspired despite following a Systems Oriented Approach the need is to clearly Articulate the Vision & Purpose
14) A Clearly Articulated Vision & Purpose Inspires the entire Team to rally behind it and realise the Power of Systems and Processes inorder to achieve take the Vision to fruition
15) When the “Mission to Put A Man on the Moon” was being planned even the Janitor who looked after the Cleanliness of the Toilets in the Head Quarters of NASA felt he was part of that Mission
16) Because his organisation made him feel from within that his work of Providing Clean Toilets for the Scientists made a significant difference to them and helped them in doing their work of putting a man on the moon
17) Therefore when President Kennedy visited the Toilet and found the Janitor working at an odd hour he asked him, ‘Why are you working at this hour’. To this question the Janitor replied, ‘I am on a Mission of put a Man on the Moon’
18) Thus even a repetitive menial job can become inspirational if it is integral to the larger Purpose
19) This is exactly the reason why it is important to define the larger Purpose of the Business (Vision) and to draw the Path to the Purpose (Mission)
20) If the Vison/Mission is Inspiring then all the work around this too becomes super inspiring even if it involves the need for consistency demanded by the Systems Approach
21) An Inspirational Vision has the Power to inspire a Team of Super Performers to rally behind it & Produce their most Amazing work day in a day out in a consistent manner without feeling bored or tired
22) So while Systems & Processes are Necessary, they alone are not Sufficient
23) An Inspirational Vision / Mission is needed to make the Systems Oriented Approach successful
I rest my case
